When is the best wind season in Fuerteventura?

The best wind season in Fuerteventura typically runs from March to October, with the peak wind conditions occurring from June to September. During these months, the island experiences consistent trade winds (alisios), making it ideal for water sports like kitesurfing, windsurfing, and wingfoiling.

  • March to June: Winds are strong but not as intense, making it a great time for both beginners and experienced riders.
  • July to September: These are the windiest months, with strong and reliable winds, ideal for all levels especially for advanced riders looking to push their limits.

October: Winds remain good, though it can be a bit less predictable as the season transitions into autumn.

Fuerteventura's winds are typically side-shore or cross-shore, making the island one of the best locations in Europe for water sports.

What is the Alisios Wind?
The Alisios wind is a northeast trade wind that blows from the northeast toward the southwest. It is part of the global wind system that affects tropical and subtropical regions. In the case of the Canary Islands, the Alisios wind is predominantly influenced by the Azores High, a high-pressure system that sits over the Azores Islands and helps to funnel winds down toward the Canary Islands.

Characteristics of the Alisios Wind in Fuerteventura

  • Direction: The Alisios wind typically blows from the northeast (30° to 60°). It is usually side-shore (offshore in some spots) along the eastern coast of Fuerteventura, which is perfect for water sports.
  • Consistency: One of the most notable features of the Alisios wind is its reliability. It blows consistently, especially from late spring to autumn, making the island a prime destination for water sports enthusiasts.
  • Strength: The wind is generally moderate to strong, with average speeds ranging from 15 to 25 knots during the peak season (June to September). During these months, it can sometimes gust to 30 knots or more, providing ideal conditions for experienced kitesurfers and windsurfers.
  • Temperature: The Alisios wind helps to keep the temperatures more moderate in Fuerteventura, especially during the hot summer months. The constant breeze creates a pleasant and cooling effect, making the climate comfortable for outdoor activities.
